Eagles Place G Evan Mathis On Short-Term I.R.

The Philadelphia Eagles announced Tuesday that they have placed G Evan Mathis on injured reserve with the designation to return after he suffered an MCL injury.

Previous reports indicated that Mathis could out 6-8 weeks with a sprained MCL, so this moves actually makes a good deal of sense for the Eagles.

Mathis, 32, is in third year of his five-year, $25 million contract that includes $7 million guaranteed and will make a base salary of $5 million for the 2014 season.

Last year, he appeared in all 16 games for the Eagles and was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 1 guard in the league by a wide margin.

Interestingly enough, the Eagles reportedly field trade offers from Mathis this past offseason, but nothing ever materialized.
