Eagles RB Darren Sproles Says 2017 Will Be His Final Year In NFL

Eagles RB Darren Sproles mentioned that 2017 will be his final year in the NFL before calling it quits to spend more time with his daughters.

“I feel like [after 2017] it will be time,” Sproles said of moving on, via ESPN.com.

Sproles is still hoping to be back with the Eagles for the year of his career.

“That’s not up to me. That’s up to the people upstairs. I’ve got nothing to do with that,” Sproles said. “But that’s the plan.”

Last year, Sproles’ family was actually pushing him to retire but the lure of chasing a Super Bowl title convinced him to return.

“[My family] wanted me to [retire] this year. I was like, ‘Nah, I can’t. I can’t’‘” Sproles said. “The thing is, when you’re chasing that ring … you really want to get that ring.”

Sproles, 33, is a former fourth-round pick of the Chargers back in 2005. He spent five years in San Diego before signing on with the Saints in 2011. New Orleans later traded him to the Eagles for the 2014 season.

Sproles has one year remaining on his two-year, $8 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $4 million to go along with a roster bonus on the 15th day of the 2017 league year.

In 2016, Sproles has appeared in 14 games for the Eagles and rushed for 406 yards on 85 carries (4.8 YPC) to go along with 49 receptions for 423 yards receiving and four touchdowns. He’s also contributed 224 punt return yards. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 30 running back out of 54 qualifying players.
