Eagles RB Ryan Mathews Out For Season With Herniated Disc In Neck, Will Need Surgery

Eagles HC Doug Pederson announced that RB Ryan Mathews is out for the season with a herniated disc in his neck, per Tim McManus.

Pederson referred to Mathews’ injury as being “significant” and added that he will require surgery at some point in near future.

The Eagles will likely place Mathews on season-ending injured reserve in the coming days.

Mathews, 29, is a former first-round pick of the Chargers back in 2009. After five years in San Diego, Mathews signed on with the Eagles and later received a three-year, $11 million contract extension with $5 million guaranteed.

The Eagles owe Mathews another $4 million 2016, so he could end up being a cap casualty for Philadelphia.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Mathews would free up $4 million in available cap space while creating $1 million in dead money.

In 2016, Mathews appeared in 13 games and rushed for 661 yards on 155 carries (4.3 YPC) to go along with 13 receptions for 115 yards receiving and nine total touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 44 running back out of 52 qualifying players.
