Andrew Brandt of the National Football Post reports that Philadelphia Eagles have re-signed QB Michael Vick to a six-year, $100 million contract that will include $40 million in guaranteed money.
Brandt notes that the Eagles will reduce Vick’s cap number from $16.2 million in 2011 to $14.4 mliion.
Usually re-signing players offers better cap relief but Philly may want to front load this deal so that they’re not on the hook for a stagger sum of money if he suffers a serious injury or gets into off-the-field trouble.
The one point that we’ve continuously mentioned is that Vick’s effectiveness is derived from ability to run which just happens to be the first thing that goes with age. At 31, the Eagles clearly feel that he has several great years ahead of him.
It will be interesting to see how this effects the negotiations with DeSean Jackson as his contract is up at the end of the season.
