Eagles Releasing TE James Casey, Creates $4M In Cap Space

Update:

The Eagles have announced the release of TE James Casey.

ESPN’s Adam Caplan reports that the Eagles will be releasing veteran TE James Casey on Thursday.

  • Caplan adds that Casey shouldn’t be out of work long.

This news shouldn’t come as a major surprise, seeing as there had been talk that Casey could end up being a cap casualty this offseason.

According to OverTheCap.com, the Eagles will free up $4 million in available cap space with this move while creating no dead money.

Casey, 30, signed a three-year, $12 million contract that included $8 million guaranteed with the Eagles back in 2013. He was in the final year of his agreement and would have a base salary of $4 million, which is a hard number to justify based on his recent production.

Last year, he appeared in all 16 games and caught three passes for 59 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him down for playing 173 snaps last year to go along with a solid rating as a run-blocker.
