Eagles Waive QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson, Sign LB Ty Powell

The Philadelphia Eagles announced that they signed TE M.J. McFarland and LB Ty Powell to contracts on Tuesday and placed QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson and OL Brett Boyko on waivers.

Bethel-Thompson, 27, originally signed on with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of Sacramento State back in 2011. He has bounced around quite a bit since he entered the league, which includes short stints with the Dolphins, Vikings, Patriots and now with the Eagles.

Philadelphia signed him to a contract back in February, but they’re clearly set at the quarterback position. The odds of Bethel-Thompson cracking the 53-man roster with the money paid to Sam Bradford and Chase Daniel, as well as the fact that they used the No. 2 overall pick on Carson Wentz, were slim to none.

Bethel-Thompson was most recently with the 49ers, but has yet to appear in an NFL game.

Powell, 28, is a former seventh-round pick of the Seahawks back in 2013. He lasted just a few months in Seattle before he was waived at the start of the season.

Powell later signed on with the Giants before the Bills added him to their active roster during the 2013 season. Powell finished out his rookie contract with the Bills, but found very little interest as an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

In 2014, Powell appeared in 14 games and recorded 14 tackles, one sack, and a pass defense.
