Eagles HC Chip Kelly was asked what they do would in the event another team contacted them about backup QB Mark Sanchez to which Kelly replied: “What are you giving me?”
“I mean, we’ll listen to anything for anybody,” Kelly said, via CSNPhilly.com. “We’re not just going to put our head in the sand and say no. It better be a pretty good deal in terms of what it is. But that’s not in any of our thought process.”
Even though Kelly wouldn’t rule out the possibility of at least listening to interested teams regarding Sanchez, he stressed that keeping Sanchez in place as their backup is important for as they move forward.
“Mark has played well, but we haven’t had anybody call or ask us anything,” Kelly said. “That’s not something we’re talking about because you’re just spending time on things that could happen, should happen. I don’t know. But I know we’re really happy about him.”
Sanchez, 27, signed a one-year contract worth $2.25 million, despite finding a decent amount of interest after the Jets cut him loose.
He’s put together a pretty impressive preseason thus far, which included a solid performance against the Patriots. Sanchez completed 11-of-12 passes for 117 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in the Eagles’ second preseason game.
While there is a small chance the Eagles could trade Sanchez, all indications are that he’ll remain Nick Foles backup for the duration of the 2014 season. He may get another chance of securing multi-year contract that could include an opportunity to compete for a starting job next year.
