Ed Reed Looking For A New Contract

Ravens FS Ed Reed discussed both his future and his current contract situation with 105.7 The Fan this morning. Reed, 33, mentioned that he expects to return next season but admits it’s still a possibility that he could retire.

I plan on playing,” Reed said, via BaltimoreRavens.com. “Everybody in the world knows plans can change.”

Reed will enter the final year of his current contract that will pay him a $7.2 million base salary for the 2012 season, should he choose to return.

I got a lot on my mind I’ve been thinking about,” said Reed. “The truth of the matter is, it’s about respect. It’s about getting respect and it’s a business.”

And I know if I’m giving my heart to football, it’s going to take a toll on my later life,” he said. “My family has got to be taken care of. I don’t want to hear that I’m getting old. I don’t want to hear that.

It’s kind of strange how he’s going about the situation. First he says that there’s a chance he may not return and then he says that he’s got to take care of his family. It’s not like he’s under paid. Reed currently has the highest base salary of any safety in the entire league. I’m sure he’s talking about future compensation towards a new contract, but Reed’s production has dipped in recent years. Now that could be because he was playing at an almost unprecedented level or injuries were preventing him being as effective, but those things will have to be factored into a new contract for him.
