Evan Mathis To Begin Serious Contract Negotations With Teams “In A Week Or Two”

According to Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald, free agent G Evan Mathis said he will “ramp up” on negotiations with possible suitors within the next two weeks, once he gains a better understanding on what his options are.

Exactly what my options are aren’t as clear as they will be in a week or two,” Mathis said.

Mathis’ agent Drew Rosenhaus said in June that at least “10 teams” have shown “bona fide” interest in his client.

One of the things that I’ve assured the teams that are interested in Evan is that I’m simply not going to identify who they are and talk about them because they have a set roster at this point,” said Rosenhaus, via Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. “But there are 10 teams that have expressed bona fide interest in signing Evan.”

At that point in June, the Bills, Dolphins, Giants, Jets, Seahawks, Chiefs, Patriots and Vikings have all come up as potential options for Mathis. Only the Rams have publicly stated that they are not interested in signing the veteran.

The Dolphins has been largely linked to Mathis’ services, while Beasley writes that Miami has “some degree of interest” in signing him. In fact, Robert Klemko of MMQB.com said last month that “his money” is that the Dolphins get a deal done.

Mathis, 33, is by far the best available free agent offensive lineman and should have a decent market for his services.

Last year, Mathis appeared in nine games for the Eagles after he dealt with an MCL injury. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 2 guard out of 78 qualifying players.

We have Mathis listed as the No. 1 player in our Top 25 Best Available Free Agents list.
