Extension For Falcons WR Roddy White Possible Before Training Camp?

Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com believes it would be a wise move for the Falcons to lock up veteran WR Roddy White to a long-term contract before the start of the season.

There was some optimism that an agreement would be in place this summer, but the murder of White’s younger brother forced the two sides to table contract talks while White and his family dealt with a tragic situation.

White, 32, has one year remaining on his current contract that includes a $5 million base salary for the 2014 season. According to Overthecap.com, White has a $6.325 million cap figure, so another benefit for the Falcons would be that an extension would almost certainly reduce that number.

Ever since Brandon Marshall signed his three-year, $30 million extension with the Bears there has been speculation that this agreement could impact numerous receivers that are entering the final year of their respective contracts.

I’m sure White would love to secure that kind of contract, but he is a few years older than Marshall, which could work against him in the end. White has said previously that he would like to play another three or four years in the NFL.

Over the course of his career, White has been one of the most durable players in the NFL. In fact he missed the first games of his career this past season due to hamstring and ankle injuries.

In 2013, he caught 55 receptions for 620 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

We have White listed as the No. 23 player in our Top 25 – 2015 Free Agents list.
