Falcons Are Not Asking DE Osi Umenyiora To Take A Pay Cut

Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff has confirmed, via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, that veteran DE Osi Umenyiora will be back with the team next season, despite previous reports that the had approached him regarding a pay cut.

  • Atlanta will also retain DE Kroy Biermann at his current salary as well.

Umenyiora, 32, signed a two-year deal worth $8.5 million that included $5 million guaranteed last year. He will make $3.5 million for the 2014 season, but has a $500, 000 roster bonus due on March 25.

The Falcons could free up $3.5 million by releasing Umenyiora, according to OverTheCap.com, but they apparently value his leadership and ability to work with some of their younger players.

In his first year with the team, he produced 47 tackles, 7.5 sacks an interception and three forced fumbles.
