Falcons Expected To Be “Strong Players” Free Agent CB Byron Maxwell

Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that there has been “a lot of talk” that the Atlanta Falcons will be “strong players” for Seahawks free agent CB Byron Maxwell this offseason.

Atlanta hired Seahawks DC Dan Quinn as their head coach in recent weeks, so there are some obvious ties between the two parties.

Garafolo mentions that this connection is likely to be a “big factor.”

Seahawks GM John Schneider didn’t sound optimistic about retaining Maxwell during his Thursday press conference, but said that he wants to have him back. Schneider added that he expects Maxwell to have a strong market.

Before the Super Bowl, Maxwell said that his agent and the Seahawks had started to discuss a potential contract extension, but it sounds like there hasn’t been much, if any progress since then.

Seattle does have a number of players set to be free agents this March, but Maxwell is clearly the most notable player among this group.

Maxwell and Desmond Trufant would make for a solid tandem if they do end up signing him to a contract.

Maxwell, 26, has played out his four-year, $2,153,452 rookie contract and will now be an unrestricted free agent this March.

In 2014, Maxwell recorded 39 tackles, two interceptions, a fumble recovery and 12 pass defenses over the course of 13 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 45 cornerback out of 108 qualifying players.

We have Maxwell listed as the No. 19 player in our Top 75 Free Agents list.
