Falcons & LB Sean Weatherspoon Could Agree On A New Deal “Very Soon”

Vaughn McClure of ESPN mentions that the Falcons and free agent LB Sean Weatherspoon could have an agreement in place on a new contract extension “very soon.”

Last month, Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff make it clear on Tuesday that they plan to re-sign Weaatherspoon this offseason.

Sean Weatherspoon is going to be an important part of building this defense and building this team,” Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said, via Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “He has that side of him and that leadership that we need across the board.

Weatherspoon unfortunately went down with a torn Achilles before the start of the 2014 season. He has reportedly been working hard to get back on the field in what is expected to be an 8-to-10 month rehab.

“He’s a guy that’s really, really focused on his rehab,” Dimitroff said. “We need him back in this organization to help us go to another level. He’s starting to move around.

Weatherspoon, 27, will be an unrestricted free agent next week, but his market is likely to be impacted by the serious injury he sustained last summer.

With this in mind, some team could get a good deal on a linebacker who is still in the prime of his career.

In 2013, Weatherspoon appeared in just seven games and recorded 38 tackles, one interception, two pass defenses and a defensive touchdown.
