Falcons Officially Pick Up OT Jake Matthews’ Fifth-Year Option

The Atlanta Falcons announced Tuesday that they’ve officially exercised OT Jake Matthews‘ fifth-year option.

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, considering that Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff told reporters last week that they were planning to do so.

The fifth-year option is guaranteed only for injury and won’t prevent them from working on a long-term extension over the next year.

Matthews, 25, was taken with the No. 6 overall pick by the Falcons back in 2014. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $16.5 million rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $690,000 for the 2017 season.

In 2016, Matthews appeared in all 16 games for the Falcons and was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 37 offensive tackle out of 78 qualifying players.
