Falcons Placing RB Devonta Freeman On Injured Reserve

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports is reporting that the Falcons are placing RB Devonta Freeman on injured reserve Tuesday with a foot injury.

  • Ian Rapoport adds that Freeman is undergoing groin surgery, but there’s still a chance he could return later on in the year.

The Falcons will move forward with Tevin Coleman and rookie Ito Smith as their top-two running backs with Freeman heading to injured reserve.

Freeman, 26, is a former fourth-round pick of the Falcons back in 2014. He was in the final year of his four-year, $2.7 million contract when he and the Falcons agreed to a five-year, $41.25 million extension that included $22 million guaranteed last year.

Freeman stands to make base salaries of $2 million and $3.75 million over the next two years of the agreement.

In 2018, Freeman has appeared two games and rushed for 68 yards on 14 carries (4.96 YPC) to go along with five receptions for 23 yards receiving and no touchdowns.
