Falcons Roster Cuts Including TE Tony Moeaki, Place G Jon Asamoah On Injured Reserve

Update:

The Atlanta Falcons have placed G Jon Asamoah on the season-ending injured reserve, and released TE Tony Moeaki, per Aaron Wilson

Other Falcons’ roster cuts include:

Moeaki, 28, signed a one-year contract with the Falcons back in March. Although he has a lengthy history of injuries, Moeaki was belueved to be completely healthy heading into this season.

He spent the 2014 season with the Seahawks, appearing in six games, recording eight receptions for 134 yards and one touchdown. Moeaki has also had stints with the Bills and Chiefs.

The Falcons are reportedly working on an injury settlement for RB Antone Smith, according to Zach Klein. If the two sides aren’t able to get an agreement in place, Klein mentions that Smith will be waived.

The Atlanta Falcons announced the release of eight players on Friday, as they work to get down to 53 players by tomorrow’s deadline.

D. Orlando Ledbetter reports that the Falcons have also released QB T.J. Yates.

Vaughn McClure mentions that while the Falcons currently have Sean Renfree as their backup, they’re still likely to be in the market for another quarterback in the coming days.

Yates, 27, is a former fifth round pick of the Texans back in 2011. He came over in a trade with the Texans that sent ILB Akeem Dent to Houston.

The Falcons elected to re-sign him to a one-year contract back in March, but recent reports had said that they weren’t enamored with him as their backup to Matt Ryan.

Last year, Yates wound up appearing in just one game for the Falcons last year and threw for 64 yards and an interception.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Falcons have released veteran QB Rex Grossman on Friday.

This really shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. In fact, it was more surprising that they signed him to a contract a few weeks into the preseason.

Grossman, 34, previously found interest from the Browns several months ago, but he ultimately passed on the opportunity. He was apparently dealing with an injury a few weeks ago that he sustained while training.

Grossman last appeared in an NFL game during the 2011 season when he was playing for the Redskins.
