Falcons Release Veteran WR/KR Devin Hester

The Atlanta Falcons announced Tuesday that they have released veteran WR/KR Devin Hester.

There was some speculation that Hester could be a release candidate this summer, so this doesn’t come as a complete surprise.

Hester, 33, is a former second-round pick of the Bears back in 2006. After eight years with the Bears, Hester signed a three-year, $9 million contract that included $3.5 million guaranteed. He was set to make a base salary of $3.5 million for the 2016 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing will free up $3 million in available cap space while creating $833,334 in dead money.

During the offseason, Hester underwent foot surgery, but was hoping to be ready for training camp.

In 2015, Hester was limited to appearing in just five games for the Falcons and totaling 235 kick return yards and 34 punt return yards.
