Falcons Sign GM Thomas Dimitroff, HC Mike Smith & CEO Rich McKay To Extensions

  • Ian Rapoport reports that each of these men received a one-year extension.

Statement from owner Arthur Blank:

“We are fortunate to have talented key leaders at the Falcons who are dedicated to a common goal of being a league leader on and off the field,” Falcons Owner & Chairman Arthur Blank said.  “I have great respect for the skills and commitment of Rich, Thomas and Smitty, and I look forward to continuing to support and work with them in the years to come.

Dimitroff is widely regarded as one of the best general manager’s in the league, which is evident by the fact that he’s been able to take the Falcons from a middle-of-the-pack team to one of most consistent teams in the NFC.

Under Dimitroff, the Falcons have won nearly 77 percent of their regular season games and came very close to a Super Bowl appearance in 2012. However, the wheels came off this past season as injuries and a lack of overall depth contributed to their 4-12 record.

Mike Smith has done a pretty good job overall, but has been criticized at times for his decision-making. This happens with every head coach in the NFL and the Falcons have given no indication that they were considering the idea of replacing him at some point.

Smith’s regular season record as the team’s head coach is 60-36
