Falcons Will Receive A $7M Cap Credit From Tony Gonzalez Joining CBS

Adam Caplan of ESPN mentions that the Atlanta Falcons will receive a $7 million cap credit now that TE Tony Gonzalez has accepted an analyst position with CBS.

  • Caplan adds that the Falcons will still have $1.75 million in dead money from Gonzalez’s prorated bonus.
  • Gonzalez’s contract included a $3 million roster bonus that was due on March 13, according to Caplan.

With Gonzalez now coming off of the books, the Falcons should have close to $20 million in available cap space based on OverTheCap.com’s Salary Cap Calculator.

The Falcons have said that they intend to upgrade their offensive and defensive lines this offseason, while looking for other upgrades, possibly at the safety position. They don’t really have any must-sign free agents, however, Julio Jones will need a contract extension at some point, so that could be a consideration for the team now that he’s eligible to negotiate a long-term deal.
