Fletcher Cox Turned Down Deal From Eagles With Over $60M Gtd?

Howard Eskin of 94WIP mentioned Tuesday morning that Eagles DL Fletcher Cox turned down a deal that included over $60 million guaranteed.

“He’s been offered over $60 million guaranteed,” Eskin said, via CBS Philly. “It’s mind-boggling. His agent is a guy by the named of Todd France who is really, really — I’ve been told that people think he’s brutal and he’s a tough guy. But here’s the other things that I’ve heard from around the NFL, he represents other players that play the position on the defensive line. And in this case, there’s a belief out there that he is trying to get more money for Fletcher Cox just so that increases the value of the other defensive lineman out there that he represents.”

Eskin did, however, say that he believes the two sides will eventually be able to get a long-term deal in place.

“I do think they get the deal,” Eskin said. “In the end, the agent works for the player, the player doesn’t work for the agent. Especially at that position, you can get hurt in the first game.”

There has surprisingly been very little buzz regarding a new contract for Cox in the past month or so, especially considering how proactive the Eagles were with re-signing their core players.

Eagles VP of football operations Howie Roseman said previously that re-signing Cox was a “huge priority” for them.

“Our intention for Fletcher is to always be an Eagle. We’ve made that known to him,” Roseman said, per CSNPhilly.com. “Sometimes these things don’t happen so quickly. We’ve been very fortunate to get five contracts done. But history says that’s probably the exception, not the norm.”

Cox, 25, played out his four-year, $10.241 million rookie contract last year before the Eagles elected to pick up his fifth-year option. He’ll make a base salary of $7.799 million for the 2016 season.

In 2015, Cox appeared in all 16 games for the Eagles and recorded 71 tackles, 9.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, two recoveries and two pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 2 defensive end in a 3-4 defense out of 57 qualifying players.
