Former Baylor DE Shawn Oakman Indicted In Sexual Assault Case

Former Baylor DE Shawn Oakman was indicted on a sexual assault charge Wednesday, according to Tommy Witherspoon of the Waco Tribune.

Oakman is facing one count of sexually assaulting a Baylor student in an alleged incident that took place back in April.

However, Oakman maintains that the sexual relationship was consensual.

Shawn Oakman maintains his innocence in regard to the recent accusations made against him, and he insists that the sexual relationship in this case was consensual,” said Oakman’s attorney, Michelle Tuegel. “It is unfortunate that this situation has been lumped in with other events that are unrelated. It is important that we not rush to judgment. Every citizen accused of a crime in this country is presumed innocent unless the state proves the accused offense beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. We look forward to vigorously defending Mr. Oakman and presenting the facts involved in this situation.”

Oakman allegedly sexually assaulted the Baylor student after leaving a Waco nightclub early in the morning. Oakman said at the time that the sexual contact was consensual, but police still searched his residence on April 3.

Oakman allegedly “forced” the women into a bedroom and “forcibly removed” her clothes, “forced” her onto the bed and sexually assaulted her, according to the affidavit.

Witherspoon mentions that court documents show that officers seized two comforters, a fitted sheet and a flat sheet from Oakman’s bedroom. The records also show that woman went to the hospital after the alleged assault and was examined by a sexual assault nurse examiner.

Oakman was a draft hopeful, but wound up going undrafted. It’s very likely that he’ll never get an opportunity to play in the NFL, due to the disturbing allegations and serious legal issues he’s facing.

During his three years at Baylor, Oakman recorded 128 tackles, 46.5 tackles for a loss, 17.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles, three recoveries and three pass defenses.
