Former Browns DC Jim O’Neil Could Be “New Favorite” For 49ers’ DC Job

Rand Getlin of NFL Media reports that the former Browns defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil is a strong candidate for the same position with the 49ers.

In fact, Getlin mentions that O’Neil could be the “new favorite” to run the 49ers’ defense.

Last we heard, 49ers told LBs coach Jason Tarver that he is the top candidate within the organization to become the team’s next defensive coordinator. However, they still planned to consider other candidates outside of the organization.

The 49ers fired DC Eric Mangini on Friday, which came just a day after Texans LBs coach Mike Vrabel, but he he elected to turn down the job.

During his press conference on Wednesday, new HC Chip Kelly described what he’s looking for in a coordinator.

I’m looking for a defensive coordinator that can shut people out,” Kelly said. “I’m a base 3-4 guy.

In 2015, Mangini’s defense ranked No. 29 yards allowed, No. 27, in pass yards, No. 29 in rush yards, and No. 18 in points allowed, so there’s plenty of work to be done next year.

We’ll have more regarding the 49ers’ defensive coordinator position as the news is available.
