Former Packers CB Sam Shields Has No Plans To Retire, Despite Concussion Issues

Rob Demovsky of ESPN reports that former Packers CB Sam Shields has no plans to retire and intends to resume his NFL career next year.

The Packers released Shields Wednesday morning (NFLTR) in a move that cleared $9 million of cap space for them.

It’s worth mentioning that signing Shields to a contract won’t impact a team’s compensatory picks next year, considering that he was released.

Shields suffered a concussion back in Week 1 and wound up missing the remainder of the season.

A month ago, Shields mentioned that he was still dealing with headaches, despite the fact that he was several months removed from the concussion.

“Some days it’s tough headaches, some days it’s mild,” Shields said following the NFC Championship Game. “It varies. I never know. I’m so used to it that it’s just normal. Like I said, each day it’s getting better. I’ll be back.”

Shields, 29, wound up signing on with the Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Miami back in 2010. He’s spent all seven years of his career with the Packers and was entering the final year of his four-year, $39 million contract when he was cut loose.

In 2016, Shields appeared in one game and recorded three tackles for the Packers.
