Former Packers QB Joe Callahan Clears Waivers, Now Free Agent

On Wednesday, QB Joe Callahan passed through waivers unclaimed, which makes him an unrestricted free agent and free to sign on with a team of his choosing.

Packers HC Mike McCarthy previously expressed regret that Callahan was claimed and they weren’t able to sign him to their practice, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see them add him to their taxi squad in the coming days.

Callahan, 23, wound up signing a three-year, $1.62 million contract with the Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Wesley College back in May. He was able to make the 53-man roster as the team’s No. 3 quarterback coming out of the preseason.

The Packers elected to cut him loose and were hoping to sign him to their practice squad but the Saints wound up claiming him off of waivers. New Orleans also wound up in a roster crunch and cut Callahan loose back in October and he was once again claimed off waivers by the Browns.

Cleveland cut Callahan earlier in the week now that QB Robert Griffin III is close to returning.

During the preseason, Callahan threw for 499 yards while completing 61.4 percent of his passes to go along with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
