Former Vikings K Blair Walsh Goes Unclaimed, Now A Free Agent

Former Vikings K Blair Walsh officially passed through waivers on Wednesday and is now an unrestricted free agent.

This shouldn’t come as a big surprise, considering that no one was going to claim his contract and the fact that kickers are rarely claimed by other teams.

Even so, Walsh will now get an opportunity to sign on with a team of his choosing at some point.

Walsh, 26, is a former sixth-round pick of the Vikings back in 2012. He’s was in the second year of his five-year, $13.66 million contract and set to make a base salary of $1.15 million for the 2016 season when the Vikings cut him loose on Tuesday.

Minnesota wasted little time in signing a new kicker, as they agreed to terms with K Kai Forbath less than an hour after the news of Walsh’s release broke.

In 2016, Walsh has appeared in nine games and converted 12 of 16 field goal attempts (75 percent) to go along with 15 of 19 extra point tries (78.9 percent) and 19 touchbacks.
