Jason Cole of B/R reports that the NFL has yet to render any kind of decision regarding free agent OLB Aldon Smith‘s status for the 2015 season, there are four teams willing to sign him to a contract right now.
According to Cole, these teams won’t sign Smith to a contract until they have a better idea of the league’s plans are in terms of disciple for his off-the-field issues.
As of now, these teams remain in a holding pattern until more information is available, but as soon as they have an idea of what the league’s plans are, Cole expects Smith to be signed.
There was some talk in the past month that the Giants could be among the interested teams in Smith, given that they could use some pass-rush help. However, there hasn’t been much regarding the idea since then.
The NFL is apparently still looking into Smith’s most recent arrest in which he was cited for a hit and run, DUI, and vandalism. Considering that Smith’s latest arrest involves both substance-abuse policy and personal conduct policy, it’s possible that he could be in line for a lengthy suspension.
Smith, 25, had his fifth-year option picked up by the 49ers last year, but his decision to rework his contract and include a pay-as-you-go structure ultimately allowed San Francisco to move on without any cap implications.
In 2014, Smith appeared in seven games and recorded 15 tackles and two sacks for the 49ers’ defense. He’ll be an unrestricted free agent next year, so he clearly has a lot to prove in 2015.
