Franchise Tag Appears Likely For Wes Welker

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the New England Patriots are expected to franchise WR Wes Welker in the coming days. Schefter admits that there’s still a chance that a long-term agreement could happen but it appears as though the Patriots are more comfortable applying the tag.

Welker will be 31 at the start of the season so the team has been reluctant to commit a long-term contract to a receiver that’s entering his thirties. Wes has remained a productive weapon for the Pat’s but will most likely end up with a one-year deal worth $9.5 million.
