Free agent S James Ihedigbo mentioned during an interview with Sirius XM NFL Radio that he could accept a minimum veteran contract with an NFL team right now, but he’s still looking for the right fit.
“Yeah, could my agent possibly get me a league-minimum deal with somebody right now? Yeah. But at the other end of it, you increase your value if you were to just patiently wait for that opportunity, which tends to happen every year,” Ihedigbo said.
Ihedigbo added that he believes he still has a lot to offer an NFL team.
“It’s all part of the process,” Ihedigbo said. “I understand and many other guys like myself that have been in the business understand this time of year. You have a desire, I have a great love for the game, I know that I have a lot to still offer to the game and to a team and play at a high level. But with that being said, you’ve got to be in the right situation that’s going to allow you to excel. And, of course, it’s dollar amounts, it’s teams’ interests. All of that comes into account.
“But this is a time of year where you’re patiently waiting, you’re preparing yourself — I know I am, personally, preparing myself for the opportunity that presents itself — but with that being said, if you have a passion and you have a desire to continue to play, staying in shape, that’s not going to be an issue.”
Ihedigbo previously mentioned that he would “love” to play for his the Texans, who happen to be his hometown team.
“I would love to play for the Houston Texans,” Ihedigbo said. “I think it’s a great fit. It could be a great fit for both of us. I could definitely add to an already stout defense.”
However, the Texans haven’t shown any reported interest in him up to this point.
Ihedigbo, 32, originally signed on with the Jets as an undrafted free agent back in 2007. He spent four years in New York before catching on with the Patriots and later with the Ravens.
Ihedigbo signed a two-year contract with the Lions back in March of 2014, but Detroit made it clear that they weren’t interested in bringing him back.
In 2015, Ihedigbo appeared in 15 games and recorded 63 tackles, one sack, an interception, three forced fumbles, and two pass defenses for the Lions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 64 safety out of 88 qualifying players.
