Clark Judge of CBSSports.com writes that there’s been some speculation that the New York Giants could look to deal DE Osi Umenyiora at some point during the offseason.
Umenyiora’s name was constantly coming in trade rumors during last season’s short-lived free agency period. The Giants ultimately chose to keep him around which proved to be the right move as they’re headed to their second Super Bowl in five years.
Still, Umenyiora will continue to push for a new contract in the coming months and the Giants have arguably the league’s best young defensive end in Jason Pierre-Paul. New York could look to deal Umenyiora rather than deal with another offseason filled with holdout threats and trade requests. Osi will be 30 at the start of the 2012 season and he should at least have some trade value. Another strong performance in the Super Bowl would only add to the amount interest in him.
It’s worth noting that this is just early speculation but it’s at the least a topic to watch during the offseason.

It was suggested as a starting point for negotiations. Last year only the Seahawks were willing to consider trading a first-round pick for him so another year in which he dealt with an injury that cost him a number of games isn’t going to increase his value. He’s a very productive player but he’s only worth what a team is willing to give up for him and last year that was a second-round pick. Yes, a deal could evolve to include another pick but the previous comment was intended as basis.
How much would it take to get him? A third rounder? More? Because a line featuring Peppers and him would make the Bears pretty dang impressive, although I don’t really know how they are doing on cap space

Last year, the Giants were looking for a first-round pick in return for Umenyiora but only the Seahawks showed strong interest.
The guy is still one of the best pass rushers in the league. Consider his stat line from this season:
In only 374 snaps, he managed 9 sacks and twenty pressures. That’s very productive for such a small amount of time. With that being said, you’d have to think that the Giants would still be looking for a first or second-round pick in return for him. He’ll be 30 at the start of next season and would be one of the top pass rushers available in either of the free agent or trade markets.
He would be an excellent addition to the Bears defensive front and the Bears are projected to have somewhere around $20 million in cap space. Chicago will still have to address Matt Forte, Israel Idonije, Tim Jennings and Amobi Okoye but it’s certainly a possibility. Chicago has two third-rounds picks to work with so they could deal a second-round pick to the Giants if they’re willing to lower their asking price from a season ago.
Purely a speculative option but interesting non-the-less.
Thanks for all of that..I was thinking along the same lines as you, we could trade that second rounder if needed because we have that 9th selection in the third..Having only 20M definitely limits a little more than I thought, as we definitely need to get Forte locked up, and grab a WR in the first two picks this draft…And i don’t really see much that we could do to salary dump unless something happens with Briggs..and even if it means Osi, Im not comfortable with making that move…
