Giants & Eli Manning Have Made “Significant Progress”, Could Have Deal Done By Sunday

Update:

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media is now reporting that the Giants and QB Eli Manning have made significant progress towards a long-term contract extension.

  • According to Rapoport’s sources, there’s now confidence that an agreement could be in place before Sunday’s game.

Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports that the “significant gap” between the Giants and QB Eli Manning in their contract negotiations has “shrunk considerably.

According to Vacchiano, there’s now optimism that a “deal can be reached relatively quickly”, even though there’s still work to be done.

Contract talks between the two parties have reportedly “intensified” in recent weeks. However, a source tells Vacchiano that having an agreement in place before Sunday night’s game is “not guaranteed” to happen.

Although, Vacchiano adds that a deal could still happen at any time.

Vacchiano seems to think Manning will ultimately come away with a similar contract to the ones recently signed by Chargers QB Philip Rivers and Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger.

Jordan Raanan of NJ.com reports that the Giants and QB Eli Manning have made progress in recent weeks regarding a contract extension, and Raanan mentions that it’s possible an agreement could be in place by this weekend.

A person with knowledge of the negotiations tells Raanan, that they expected a deal to be done by the start of the season. The Giants will take on the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football, so we’ll have to see if they’re able to continue to make progress in the coming days.

All indications have been that the Giants are committed to Manning being their quarterback in the coming years.

Last month, Chargers QB Philip Rivers walked away with a four-year contract extension worth a reported $83.25 million and an NFL-high $65 million guaranteed, which could be used as the framework for Manning’s next contract.

Manning, 34, has one year remaining on his seven-year, $106.9 million contract that included $35 million guaranteed. His base salary for the 2015 season sits at $17 million to go along with a staggering cap figure of $19.75 million.

In 2014, Manning threw for 4,410 yards while completing 63.1 percent of his passes to go along with 30 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 18 quarterback out of 39 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding an extension between the Giants and Manning as the news is available.
