Giants GM Dave Gettleman On Dez Bryant: “We’re Interested In Everybody”

Following the news that the Giants are releasing veteran WR Brandon Marshall on Thursday (NFLTR), GM Dave Gettleman was asked about possibly signing free agent WR Dez Bryant to which he responded (per Jordan Raanan): “We’re interested in everybody.”

It was clear that speculation about the Giants signing Bryant was going to pick up after they released Marshall, but this is essentially a confirmation that bringing Bryant is a serious possibility.

After speaking with Bryant, Mike Fisher of 247sports.com got the sense that the Giants are the atop Bryant’s wish list. In fact, Bryant went into detail about the Giants being a fit for him.

“The Giants, got a helluva defense, they’re going to pay OBJ (fellow wideout and pal Odell Beckham Jr.), so coming back. Playing with him, Sterling (Shepard) … the tight end (Evan Engram), (QB Eli) Manning? Crazy,” Bryant said. “They draft (Penn State running back Saquan Barkley with the No. 2 overall pick)? That’d be crazy!

It’s worth mentioning that signing Bryant to a contract won’t impact a team’s 2019 compensatory picks, given that he was released this offseason.

Bryant, 29, is a former first-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2010. He was in the third year of his five-year, $70 million contract that included $45 million guaranteed and was set to make base salaries of $12.5 million over the final two years of the agreement when Dallas released him in a move that freed up $8.5 million of available cap space.

In 2017, Bryant has appeared in 15 games for the Cowboys and has caught 66 passes for 814 yards receiving and six touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 45 receiver out of 116 qualifying players.

We have him featured in our Top 50 Available 2018 NFL Free Agents list.
