Giants GM Dave Gettleman Plans To Keep Eli Manning, Will Still Consider Drafting QB

Chris Mortensen, citing sources familiar with the discussions, reports that Giants GM Dave Gettleman has reaffirmed his desire for Eli Manning to remain as the team’s quarterback during a recent meeting over a week ago.

According to Mortensen, Gettleman did, however, explain that they will still evaluate quarterbacks in the 2018 NFL draft class. Manning reportedly reaffirmed his desire to remain in New York and had no trepidation about a potential successor being drafted this year.

Mortensen says that Manning believes in his own abilities to perform at a high level, especially if the Giants are able to fix some things.

New York is expected to focus on rebuilding their offensive line and putting together a strong rushing attack much the Panthers had under Gettleman.

Both Gettleman and Manning told Mortensen that the meeting was very positive.

Mortensen adds that Pat Shurmur, who is expected to be hired as the Giants’ next head coach, also offered a favorable impression of Manning in his interview with Gettleman.

Manning, 37, is a former first-round pick of the Chargers back in 2004. He was traded to the Giants during the draft and has spent all 14 years of his career in New York.

Manning is entering the fourth year of his five-year, $101.5 million contract that included $65 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $10.5 million and $11.5 million over the final two years of the agreement.

In 2017, Manning appeared in 15 games for the Giants and threw for 3,468 yards while completing 61.6 percent of his passes to go along with 19 touchdowns and 13 touchdowns.
