Giants Have Not Discussed Offering QB Eli Manning A New Extension

 

In a question and answer segment with the New York Post, co-owner John Mara stated that the Giants have not discussed a contract extension with QB Eli Manning.

“We haven’t even really discussed that yet,” Mara told Steve Serby, “We’ll discuss that at the appropriate time.  Obviously it’s our hope that he finish his career as a Giant.”

Mara’s comments are interesting, as Manning’s contract is set to expire after the 2015 season.  He is owed $15.15 and $17 million in the next two seasons.  With no clear successor, it may be in New York’s interest to at least breach the topic.

Manning did struggle last year, throwing a career high 27 interceptions, against only 18 touchdown passes, his lowest total since his abbreviated rookie season.

The Giants did draft QB Ryan Nassib in 2013, and while it is entirely too early to rate his prospects now, there were numerous reports that Nassib struggled in practice throughout his first year.

The only other quarterback on the roster is veteran Curtis Painter.

The Giants may want to wait and see if Manning has a bounce back season before commencing talks, but this is a situation that merits attention.
