Giants Hire Thomas McGaughey As Special Teams Coordinator

Ryan Dunleavy of NJ.com reports that the Giants have hired Thomas McGaughey as their new special teams coordinator.

Reports have said for a few days now that McGaughey was likely to be hired by the Giants as part of Pat Shurmur’s staff, so this shouldn’t come as a big surprise.

McGaughey reportedly was confident enough about getting the Giants’ job that he turned down special teams opportunities elsewhere.

McGaughey will replace Tom Quinn in New York.

The Panthers recently made the decision to promote assistant special teams coach Chase Blackburn to coordinator which allowed McGaughey to become available.

McGaughey was the Panthers’ assistant special teams coach before he replaced Bruce DeHaven as their special teams coordinator six months later.

According to Football Outsiders, the Panthers were the No. 6 special teams unit in 2017.
