Giants Hosting RB Jonathan Stewart For Visit Tuesday

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that the Giants are expected to host free agent RB Jonathan Stewart for a visit on Tuesday. Pelissero points out that the Giants have Stewart’s old offensive coordinator Mike Shula on their staff.

Stewart recently visited the Lions and Seahawks but left without agreements in place.

It’s worth mentioning that signing Stewart to a contract won’t impact a team’s 2019 compensatory picks, given that he was released this offseason.

Stewart, 30, is a former first-round pick of the Panthers back in 2008. He was in the final year of his six-year, $37.811 million contract when he signed a two-year, $8 million deal that included $1.1 million guaranteed with the Panthers last year.

Stewart was set to make a base salary of $1.9 million for the 2018 season when the Panthers released him a few weeks ago in a move that created $3,718,750 of available cap space.

In 2017, Stewart appeared in 15 games for the Panthers and rushed for 680 yards on 198 carries (3.4 YPC) to go along with eight receptions for 52 yards receiving and seven total touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 51 running back out of 58 qualifying players.
