Giants Have No Plans To Bench Eli Manning This Season

While the Giants have indicated that the door could be open for them to get other quarterbacks such as rookie Davis Webb some playing time later on in the season, Ian Rapoport reports that New York has no plans to bench Eli Manning.

In fact, Rapoport says that it would essentially take a “catastrophe” for the Giants send Manning to the bench. Rapoport explains that if they were to bench Manning, it simply wouldn’t be something that they could not come back from if they went this route.

Rapoport mentions that the Giants would like to see Webb play, but it’s unlikely he’ll see any “meaningful snaps” this year, which implies he would only get on the field for in blowout situations.

As for HC Ben McAdoo, Rapoport says that players have privately supported him, even though some anonymously criticized him earlier in the week.

Last week, Jordan Raanan of ESPN reported that Giants ownership directed the team to begin looking closely at the top college quarterbacks prospects, as they prepare for the future of the franchise.

According to Raanan, co-owner John Mara gave the directive around the time WR Odell Beckham Jr. was lost for the season with a broken ankle.

The Giants sent VP of player evaluation Marc Ross to personally to scout UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen in recent weeks.

There are other top prospects in including USC’s Sam Darnold, Wyoming’s Josh Allen, Louisville’s Lamar Jackson and Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, who could be available in next year’s class.

Manning, 36, is a former first-round pick of the Chargers back in 2004. He was traded to the Giants during the draft and has spent all 14 years of his career in New York.

Manning is currently in the third year of his five-year, $101.5 million contract that included $65 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $10.5 million and $11.5 million over the final two years of the agreement.

In 2017, Manning has appeared in eight games and thrown for 1,820 yards while completing 63.2 percent of his passes to go along with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 23 quarterback out of 36 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding the Giants and Manning as the news is available.
