Giants Notes: Odell Beckham Jr, Ben McAdoo, RJ McIntosh

Odell Beckham Jr

Regarding Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr, former HC Ben McAdoo says he “loves” the receiver and believes it makes “too much sense” for the two parties to get a long-term extension finalized.

“First of all, I got no idea what they’re planning to do, how he looks, if he’s healthy,’’ McAdoo told the New York Post. “That’s a very, very touchy subject. I would say the young man has done everything he can do to earn it. Unfortunately, he got hurt at the worst time you can get hurt, that’s the tough part about it.

“I love him. He’s a competitor, he’s a fiery, tough, loves playing, loves his teammates. They’re not gonna let him out of there. They’ll find a way to get it done. It makes too much sense to get it done.’’

Ben McAdoo

Former Giants HC Ben McAdoo agreed with the team’s decision to not select a quarterback at No. 2 overall.

With the guys that came out this year, I’m not surprised they went the route they went by not drafting a guy,” McAdoo told the New York Post. “I wouldn’t have stood on the table to draft any quarterback No. 2 either.

McAdoo added that he expects big things for WR Sterling Shepard and TE Evan Engram.

“They got some guys they are developing around Odell,’’ McAdoo said. “Shepard had a tremendous offseason and training camp last year, but he just … got [a] nagging ankle in camp and [had] nagging injuries that were haunting him all year. Engram was a young guy, there was too much on Engram’s plate. We had to put everything on his shoulders in the pass game without Odell and Shepard wasn’t 100 percent all year. … Too much for a rookie tight end to have on his plate. … He’ll be better for it this year, though. He’s a special young man.’’

RJ McIntosh

  • Giants fifth-round DL RJ McIntosh is one of just 14 players who have yet to sign their rookie contract. (NFLTR)
  • According to Ryan Dunleavy, the Giants and McIntosh have had productive discussions and a deal is expected to get done soon.
  • It’s rare for a late-round pick like McIntosh to be unsigned at this point in the year, but McIntosh has yet to participate in any of the Giants’ practices due to a “minor medical issue.” Giants HC Pat Shurmur mentioned that McIntosh was scheduled to undergo a “procedure” before training camp.
  • One possible reason for a deal not being done, according to sources who spoke to Dunleavy, is that the Giants could be asking for injury protective language to be added to the contract. Another issue could be a question of what happens to McIntosh’s guaranteed money if he ends up on the non-football injury reserve list.
