Giants now in need of backup QB

Monday’s game against the Jets was rough on the Giants quarterbacks. Most notably, Eli Manning had his head cut open after a miscue with running back Brandon Jacobs and now Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger is reporting that Jim Sorgi is out for 2 – 3 weeks with a shoulder injury. Eli was already scheduled to sit out this weekends game against the Steelers but with the lack of depth at the QB position the Giants will have to look to the free agent market for an backup.

The Bears had recently gone through their own search for a backup QB and recently signed Matt Gutierrez after getting turned down by a list of veterans due to the fact that the team was unwilling to offer any amount of guaranteed money. The Giants should be willing to make a more competitive offer than Bears but may be reluctant to commit to giving someone the backup QB position since Sorgi’s injury is only a 2 – 3 week problem. It is worth noting that the one of the reasons that Colts were willing to let Sorgi walk was because of the injury that he had sustained to his shoulder last season.

I’m sure that some of the same targets that had been mentioned with the Bears search (Trent Green, Damon Huard, Todd Collins, and Josh McCown) will be contacted.
