Giants Sign Jason Pierre-Paul To A One-Year Deal Worth Up To $8.7M

The New York Giants announced that they have officially signed DE Jason Pierre-Paul to a one-year contract.

  • Ian Rapoport reports that Pierre-Paul can earn up to $8.7 million as part of his new one-year deal with the Giants.
  • Rapoport adds that the agreement includes a prorated tag number with low guarantees, but “reachable incentives.”

“We all are excited to see Jason,” said GM Jerry Reese. “He has worked very hard to get himself back into position to join the team and work toward getting on the playing field on Sundays.”

“I’m very excited to be back,” Pierre-Paul said moments after signing his contract. “I’m getting ready to do what I have to do. I’ve been training down in South Florida with my trainer. Every day, I got up at 7:30 and lifted weights, I’ve been doing what I have to do to stay in football shape.

“It is just good to have Jason back in our building,” said HC Tom Coughlin. “You can feel his energy and his desire to overcome what he has had to endure since July. His spirit is undeniable, and he is anxious to get to work with (defensive line coach) Robert Nunn and Spags (defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo), as well as our medical and strength and conditioning people.”

Pierre-Paul and the Giants have reportedly agreed to an incentive-based contract, and the team has been granted a two-game roster exemption for Pierre-Paul, which will allow him to practice with the team.

The expectation right now is that Pierre-Paul should be eligible to play as early as Week 10.

Pierre-Paul, 26, played out his five-year, $20.05 million rookie contract that included $11,629,807 million guaranteed. The Giants used their franchise tag on Pierre-Paul back in early March, would have paid him a fully guaranteed salary of $14.813 million for the 2015 season.

In 2014, Pierre-Paul recorded 77 tackles, 12.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and a recovery over the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 7 defensive end in a 4-3 system out of 59 qualifying players.
