Giants Plan To Hold Off On Possibly Signing A Safety Until After Monday’s Game

Ralph Vacchiano, citing multiple sources, reports that the Giants told the free agent safeties they worked out on Sunday that they plan to consider their options after Monday night’s game against the Vikings.

According to Vacchiano, New York would prefer to see how tomorrow’s game goes and get an update regarding their injured safeties before deciding whether to sign someone.

The players who worked out for the Giants include Donte Whitner, Will Allen, Shamiel Gary and Jeron Johnson.

Darin Thompson will miss Week’s game and could be out for next week’s game as well. Beyond that, Nat Berhe is out with a concussion and Mykkele Thompson has been placed on injured reserve.

This leaves the Giants with Landon Collins, rookie Andrew Adams and Leon Hall, who was signed to play cornerback, as their options at safety for right now.

Whitner, 31, is a former first-round pick of the Bills back in 2006. After five years with the Bills, Whitner signed on with the 49ers and later joined the Browns in 2014.

He was in the third year of his four-year, $28 million contract when he was cut loose by the Browns back in April.

In 2015, Whitner appeared in 14 games and recorded 81 tackles, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble, no interceptions and four pass defenses for the Browns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 24 safety out of 89 qualifying players.

Allen, 34, is a former fourth-round pick of the Buccaneers back in 2004. He spent six year in Tampa Bay before signing on with the Steelers back in 2010.

Allen has been testing the open market as an unrestricted free agent, but this is the first reported interest in him since free agency got underway back in March.

In 2015, Allen appeared in 13 games for the Steelers and recorded 79 tackles, four sacks, an interception, two forced fumbles and eight pass defenses.
