Giants Release C J.D. Walton, Free Up $3M In Cap Space

The New York Giants announced the release of C J.D. Walton on Monday.

This move will allow 2014 second-round pick Weston Richburg to take over as the team’s center next season.

Walton, 27, signed a two-year, $5 million contract that included $3 million guaranteed with the Giants back in March of last year. He would have made a base salary of $2.25 million for the 2015 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Walton will free up $3 million in cap space while creating $625,000 in dead money.

Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 38 center out of 41 qualifying players last year.
