Giants RB David Wilson Will Undergo Neck Surgery

Update:

Giants GM Jerry Reece announced on Thursday that RB David Wilson will undergo surgery on his neck, per Ralph Vacchiano.

  • Ralph Vacchiano reports that David Wilson will have a fusion of the vertebrae to repair the herniated disc in his neck on Jan. 16.

“I don’t think so,” Reese said regarding whether or not Wilson could be available at the start of the 2014 season, via the New York Daily News. “No. 1: We just want David to get healthy. If he gets healthy, that’s a bonus. But I don’t think we can go into next season saying ‘David will be ready to go. He’ll be our No. 1 back.’ Necks can be tricky. You have to be careful with those things.

Surgery has remained a possibility for Wilson for months now, but the team was hoping that he could avoid undergoing the knife during the offseason.

Close to two weeks ago, Reece told reporters that he has concerns about entering the 2014 season with Wilson as the No. 1 running back, which isn’t that surprising considering the seriousness of his injury.

Wilson is dealing with both a herniated disc and spinal stenosis, so there is at least some concern about his future. However, doctors appear to be optimistic that he will be able to play again.

Giants GM Jerry Reece told reporters on Monday that they can’t reasonably expect to head into the 2014 season with David Wilson as their starting running back.

“I think we’ll have to have some contingency plans at the running back position,” Reese said, via Tom Rock of Newsday. “I don’t think you go into the next season saying David Wilson’s going to be our number one, starting running back. I don’t think you can do that. The guy is coming off of a neck surgery, if he decides to have it.”

Wilson suffered a season-ending herniated disc in his neck back in Week 5. Reports later indicated that Wilson was also dealing with spinal stenosis as well, so it makes sense that the Giants would approach this situation with a great deal of caution.

Reece added that Wilson should be able to play next year if he does in fact undergo offseason neck surgery. However, he did admit that there is at least a small chance that this could be a career-ending injury

“When you talk about necks, there’s always a possibility,” Reese said. “We’re hopeful and the earlier reports that I’ve gotten, doctors do think they can fix this and he’ll be able to play.”

Wilson was taken in the first-round of the 2012 NFL draft. It’s worth noting that the Giants will also need to make a decision regarding Andre Brown who is a free agent this offseason.
