Giants Reportedly Offering DT Johnathan Hankins Four-Year, $28M Deal

Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reports that the Giants are offering free agent DT Johnathan Hankins a four-year, $28 million contract.

Hankins has beenĀ holding out for a larger salary, according to reports, even though the Giants have had this offer on the table for several weeks now.

ā€œAt some point, you got to be pragmatic about it,ā€™ā€™ said a source familiar with the offer tells Schwartz.

Schwartz points out that this offer to Hankins is nearly identical to the contract Nick Fairley signed with the Saints a month ago.

Schwartz’s source mentioned that Hankins was originally seeking $15 million per year before dropping his asking price to $10 million annually.

The Colts brought Hankins in for a visit on Tuesday, butĀ Stephen HolderĀ of the Indianapolis StarĀ reports that Hankins left his visit without an agreement on a contract.

The Dolphins have also come up as a potential option for Hankins, but they aren’t willing to offer him the kind of money he’s looking for.

It’s possible that the best situation for Hankins could be for him to return to the Giants on a one-year contract and try to improve him market next year. Otherwise, the Giants’ four-year deal may very well be his best option.

Hankins, 24, is a former second-round pick of the Giants back in 2013. He played out the final year of his four-year, $4.03 million rookieĀ contractĀ thatĀ included a $1.311 million signing bonus and is now testing the open market as an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career.

In Ā 2016,Ā Hankins appeared in all 16 games and recorded 44 tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble for the Giants.Ā Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 72 interior defender out of 127 qualifying players.
