Giants Tried Out Veteran WR Mike Williams & LB Philip Wheeler

Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post reports that the Giants worked out veteran WR Mike Williams and LB Philip Wheeler this week.

New York is dealing with a number of injuries to their receiving corps, but it’s interesting to see them kick the tires on a veteran receiver who hasn’t found any reported interest for several months.

Williams, 28, is a former fourth-round pick of the Buccaneers back in 2010. He played out his rookie contract and later signed a six-year extension with the Bucs in July of 2013.

However, he had numerous off-the-field issues that led to the Buccaneers trading him to the Bills less than a year later for a sixth-round pick that later became Robert Herron. Buffalo elected to waive in December of last year, and there hasn’t been any reported interest in him since then.

In 2014, Williams appeared in five games and caught eight passes for 142 yards receiving and a touchdown.

Wheeler, 30, was taken in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Colts. He played out his rookie contract with Indianapolis before later catching on with the Raiders as an unrestricted free agent in 2012.

Wheeler later cashed in on a big-money deal with the Dolphins, but lasted just two years before he was released. The 49ers later took a chance on him this past April, but Wheeler was unable to make the team’s final 53-man roster.

In 2014, Wheeler appeared in 15 games and recorded 45 tackles for the Dolphins. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 18 outside linebacker in a 4-3 system out of 40 qualifying players.
