Giants Waive LB J.T. Thomas From IR, Designate DE Romeo Okwara To Return From IR

The New York Giants officially waived LB J.T. Thomas from their injured reserve with an injury settlement on Tuesday and designated DE Romeo Okwara to return from injured reserve.

This officially opens a three-week window of time for the Giants to add Okwara to their active roster or he’ll spend the duration of the 2017 season on injured reserve.

Thomas, 28, is a former sixth-round pick of the Bears back in 2011. He spent a few years in Chicago before joining the Jaguars in 2013 and later signing a three-year, $10 million contract that included $4.5 million guaranteed back in 2015.

Thomas is in the final year of his contract and was set to make a base salary of $2.975 million for the 2017 season. He was placed on the injured reserve back in September.

In 2017, Thomas appeared in two games but did not record a statistic for the Giants.

Okwara, 22, signed on with the Giants as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame back in 2016. He is in the second year of a three-year, $1.62 million contract and is set to earn a base salary of $540,000 this season.

The Giants placed him on injured reserve back in October after sustaining an MCL injury.

So far this season, Okwara has appeared in five games and recorded three total tackles.
