Giants Have Yet To Discuss A Long-Term Deal With DE Justin Tuck

According to Conor Orr of the Newark Star-Ledger, the New York Giants have not reached out to DE Justin Tuck regarding a long-term extension this season.

Tuck, 30, is in the final year of his current contract and has seen a bit of a resurgence this season, which was highlighted by his four-sack effort that earned him NFC defensive player of the week honors.

Tuck was asked if he would like to return to New York beyond this season.

“Sure I would, but it’s a business, and I understand that part of it,” said Tuck. “Obviously, the Giants are going to approach it as a business and I’m going to do the same.

While Tuck is in the midst of a solid season for the Giants, there are concerns about his future productivity. In 2012, he totaled four sacks over the course of 15 games and just five total sacks the year before. Clearly, there is more to the defensive end position than just sacks, but those figures seem to impact negotiations much more for free agents.

Pro Football Focus has Tuck rated as the No. 6 qualifying 4-3 defensive end this season. Last year, Tuck rated No. 29 overall and No. 49 overall in 2011.

All indications are that the Giants will wait until the offseason to begin contract discussions and there is a reasonable enough chance that Tuck will be playing elsewhere next season.

We have Tuck listed as the No. 34 player in our Top 50 – 2014 Free Agents list.
