Packers WR Greg Jennings Could Be Out 6 Weeks After Surgery

According to Bill Huber of the Packer Report, WR Greg Jennings‘ surgery could force him to miss six weeks.

The surgery is reportedly similar to a sports hernia rather than an abdominal tear, which was previously reported. Huber mentions that New Orleans DB Jabari Greer had a similar surgery in August, and although he was expected to three weeks, he ended up returning six weeks later. That means that Jennings could possibly back for Week 13’s game.

Jennings is set to test the free agent market unless Green Bay locks him up or slaps the franchise tag on him. We currently have Jennings listed as the No. 3 player in our Top 50 Free Agent list.

Chris Roth of ABC Green Bay reports that the Packers WR Greg Jennings will undergo surgery to repair an abdominal tear. Roth adds Jennings will not miss the remainder of the season, despite the surgery.

Packers HC Mike McCarthy mentioned that Greg Jennings is considering undergoing surgery on his injured groin.

“I had a chance to visit with Greg this am,” said McCarthy, per Adam Schein. “Greg Jennings is going through the options, surgery is one.

McCarthy added that this wouldn’t cost him to miss the rest of the season.

Jennings is clearly struggling to show signs of progress. Dating back to last season, he has been hampered by a few of injuries, which has forced the Packers offense to adjust. If Jennings does in fact undergo surgery, he could miss another 3 or 4 weeks, which would give him enough time to prepare for a possible playoff run.

ESPN Milwaukee reports that Packers WR Greg Jennings left the team on Tuesday to meet with a specialist regarding his troublesome groin injury.

It looked like Jennings was getting closer to returning, but the fact that he’s meeting with an independent specialist suggests that those reports may have been a little premature.

Green Bay will be home against the Jaguars this weekend as well as the Cardinals in Week 9 with their bye the following week, so it seems reasonable that they could hold him out to ensure that he’s really making progress. Jordy Nelson, James Jones and Randall Cobb have done a great job in recent weeks of picking up the slack for Jennings and a banged up Jermichael Finley.

This happens to be a contract year for Jennings, so it will be interesting to see if his injury plagued 2012 season will have any impact on the Packers approach towards keeping him. Green Bay could end up franchising him, but that would take up a large portion of their available cap space.

Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings could be cleared to practice Friday, but will be held out of Sunday’s game against the Jaguars, per Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

“The plan with Greg just from Day 1 was to try to get as far into the week because with his type of injury, the fatigue (is a concern), going through the testing and him maxing it out,” head coach Mike McCarthy said. “The fatigue part of it we felt, sending him out for a bunch of practice, was probably not in his best interest for the week he comes back.”

Jennings suffered a setback with his groin injury three weeks ago when he aggravated in win over the Saints. The Packers offense has been rolling as of late so there is no need for them to rush Jennings back. Barring any setbacks, Jennings will most likely return Week 9 or Week 11, as the Packers have a bye Week 10.
