Greg Jennings Would Consider Franchise Tag a “Slap in the Face”

Packers WR Greg Jennings would consider the franchise tag a slap in the face, according to Tyler Dunne.

“Nothing good about it,” said Jennings. “You don’t see Wes Welker smiling about it.”

Jennings also added that “the writing’s on the wall” and he’s not going to “act like it’s not there.”

Packers WR Greg Jennings‘ “educated guess” is that he won’t be in Green Bay next season, according to NFL.com.

“I have 31 other teams that hopefully I can show them my résumé and then walk into the door and start back over,” said Jennings.

Aaron Rodgers has done just fine without Jennings this season, incorporating receivers like Randall Cobb in more expanded roles. Losing Jennings wouldn’t really have much of an impact on the Packers.

Green Bay Packers WR Greg Jennings continued to discuss his future with the team. Jennings was asked whether or not he plans on being back with the team next season.

“Will I be here? That’s totally up to the Packers,” responded Jennings, via NFL.com. “I know one way I don’t want to be here is under a franchise tag.”

Jennings, 29, is set to become an unrestricted free agent following the season and the Packers haven’t made any attempt to discuss a long-term deal with him during the season. Considering how they’ve handled impending free agents in the past like Scott Wells and Cullen Jenkins, the tea leaves would suggest that they are more comfortable investing their funds elsewhere, but that doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t consider tagging Jennings during the offseason.

Green Bay has some obvious players to address in the coming years, e.g. Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews and B.J. Raji, but that doesn’t mean that they couldn’t free up addition cash to retain Jennings. There have already been reports that TE Jermichael Finley could be released after the season and the Packers could always ask A.J. Hawk and Charles Woodson to restructure their contracts, so the franchise tag actually seems like a possibility.

Jennings will turn 30 in September and is looking for one last long-term deal. The franchise tag is a one-year tender. “Will I be here? That’s totally up to the Packers,” he said. Jennings and the Packers have not had any contract extension talks yet. It’s very possible they’ll play hardball and end up with Jordy Nelson, James Jones and Randall Cobb as their top-three wideouts in 2013.
