Steve Corkran of the Contra Costa Times reports that the Oakland Raiders have hired Greg Olson as offensive coordinator.
Olson arrives in Oakland after having spent the 2012 season as the Jaguars quarterback coach. Before that he had been an offensive coordinator for the Buccaneers, Rams and Lions. He spent three years in Tampa Bay, which was his most successful team to this date.
The move comes as a surprise to many as the team had not stated or hinted on who would replace Greg Knapp, other than a rumor that Mike Martz could be in the mix. Holding a solid reputation in the NFL, Olson replaces Knapp as the team’s OC after a very poor season in terms of production.
Olson is expected to run a downhill, power-running attack in Oakland and luckily for him he inherits a Raiders offense that’s better suited for this style of play. We’ll have to see if a change in offensive philosophy is enough to produce better results on the field next season.
