“Increasingly Unlikely” Redskins Re-Sign ILB Perry Riley Before Free Agency

Mark Maske of the Washington Post reports that although the Redskins would like to re-sign ILB Perry Riley to a long-term deal, it’s “increasingly unlikely” that anything gets done before the start of free agency on March 11.

Maske adds that there has been “relatively little progress” towards an agreement and the two sides are not “particularly close to a deal at this point.”

A source informed Maske that although Riley is likely to shop test the free agent market, there is still a chance that he could re-sign with Washington at some point later in free agency. 

Riley, 25, is coming off of a season in which he tallied 115 tackles, one interception and a fumble recovery. There is still room for growth with Riley, but he has had some issues with stopping the run.

According to Pro Football Focus, Riley rates as the No. 46 inside linebacker out of 55 qualifying players with London Fletcher coming in at No. 55. Both of them were well below average in run defense, but Riley did show at least some ability to get to the quarterback as an inside rusher.
